In the summer of 2010 the peaceful Italian coastal town of Porto Ercole became the scene of a momentous discovery. It was the end of a long trail, the final chapter in a mystery that had gripped the art world for 400 years.
Beneath the floor of a burial crypt the possible remains of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio were brought to light; one of the greatest artists of all time, one who had turned the art of painting on its head – and then disappeared without a trace.
Aside from being one of the greatest artists in the 16th Century, Caravaggio was also the most neglected, because of his temper and his revolutionary creations. His character, like his art, was confrontational and uncompromising; bold, driven, ingenious, he was both loved and hated.
Though his great skill meant he was in demand from churches across Italy, his realistic work shocked people. His art blended the beautiful and the decadent, the religious and the obscene, the light and the shade, like never before.
This film looks at the life of this tempestuous man and at the mystery of his techniques that made him so unique.

Caravaggio was extraordinarily secretive about the techniques he used to create his ingenious and revolutionary art. He didn't employ assistants and hardly let anyone into his workshop. Although jealous rivals offered rewards to anyone who could discover his trade secrets, he took them to his grave. Or so everyone thought...Caravaggio had money troubles and was often hounded by bailiffs. Recently, an inventory was discovered detailing belongings in his Roman studio that were repossessed as payment for back rent. At last, this list offered a fascinating insight into the place where he created masterpieces, including David with the Head of Goliath and The Calling of Saint Matthew, and the tools he used.In this documentary, experts examine his life and the artistic techniques suggested by the revealing inventory. Could his work have demonstrated a technological rather than a stylistic revolution? Was he a true genius or was he using advanced tools to cut corners? Armed with the list, two groups of art students, from London and Rome, put a collection of controversial theories to the test.

Artemisia Undaunted (2012)

1 hour Documentary | Sky Arts

Synopsis

Artemisia Undaunted tells the story of the great Renaissance artist Artemisia Gentilischi who was the first woman in history to fight against the male bastions of the art world and earn her living as a successful painter. An inspiring story about a talented young artist who overcame the stigma of an early rape to become one of the great painters in an age of incomparable Italian art.

Artemisia Gentilsechi is the queen of Baroque Painting, the darling of feminist art historians, the subject of at least three best sellers, and one highly criticised movie. But what most people remember of Artemisia’s life and what they see in her art is her rape at the age of 17 by a painter and friend of her father’s. But did this cruel attack and the subsequent betrayal really lead Artemisia to act out some form of revenge in her painting? Who was the real Artemisia? A victim who relived a horrible event over and over again? A succubus who projected her revenge fantasies on her canvases? Or was she an extraordinary artist who triumphed in an era dominated by supremely talented men such as Caravaggio and Rubens?.

In this programme, the first ever documentary portrait of Artemisia Gentileschi, leading art historians and writers reveal how through sheer talent and will power, she pulled herself up out of dire circumstances to become the first woman to make a living from painting.
