Pornofilia: Anna Obsessed (1977) - Director: Martin Martin

This incredibly provocative film finds Anna (Constance Money) the victim of an attack. Following the incident, she becomes rather "hyper-sexual" and turns her attentions to other women for her sexual pleasure. Her jealous husband finds himself torn and yet needing an outlet and begins an almost comical affair at his office. The film has been heralded for its production values, sets, costumes and all-out lust performances!

Anna's marriage has lost its passion. After a traumatic rape, she is befriended by the beautiful Maggie, and succumbs to her charms. The film's production values capture the look and feel of misty film noir, especially with a serial rapist hovering in the background. Dark and foreboding, the film's best moments detail the simmering passion between Haven and Money that pays off when the lovers introduce Leslie into their now illicit relationship. It all unfolds like a smoky wet dream. The dreamy ambience keeps you glued, and the finale is impossible to predict.

ANNA, OBSESSED    1977
Directed by: Martin Martin
Starring: Jamie Gillis, Annette Haven, Constance Money, Susan McBain, John Leslie

This was one of the first porn films I ever saw on the big screen at the Pussycat Theater, and perhaps the most shocking erotica I've seen to this day. It's been reissued on DVD, and if you want a break from peppy, metronome-like smut, take a walk down this dark alley. The plot is tragic, the sex is rough, the psychology will rake your every nerve. If you like porn noir, this is your evil moment! They don't make it like this anymore. Also features genuinely beautiful people without plastic surgery.

This is one of the rare classic blue films from porn's golden period that has been transferred to DVD.

The good news is that this is the uncut version, with the original ending, which is SO much better than the weird censored version that was on VHS. The stupid news is that because the DVD manufacturer has so little respect for classic X titles, the video-to-transfer quality is poor. If you've never seen the movie before, you probably wouldn't notice, but this film was shot beautifully, it was gorgeous, and you can see that on the VHS version.

The late Jim Holliday published a review of Anna Obsessed in his compedium, (which I highly recommend) Only the Best. I have to quote him, he's so right:

"ANNA OBSESSED ranks as my all time favorite cult film sleeper, and it's a film most people have never heard of.
"The film does have an odd history. When first made as OBSESSED, it was never distributed, because it was too disturbing, too offbeat, not mainstream enough, or probably too good for the audience to understand what they were watching. In fact, based solely on the written words I've seen, it is obvious many reviewers could not understand it...

"Some eighteen months later, it resurfaced as ANNA OBSESSED in slightly different form. The film deals with the troubled marriage of Constance Money and John Leslie. She can't get off and wants to know why. It's clearly not his fault, since he performs quite capably with secretary Susan McBain. Annette Haven plays Maggie, a beautiful but mysterious photographer who soothingly, gradually seduces her. This leads Anna to invite husband Dave to get together for a three-way with her new friend, and everything seems resolved.

"However, lurking in the background throughout the film is a terrorizing rapist, who is the catalyst of the plot. Some of the events just mentioned occur out of sequence, but for purposes of understanding the film without ruining the ending, it is necessary.

"When the mysterious figure rapes Anna in her car, it is a sincerely frightening moment. She does not enjoy it. The rape is very explicit, using a pistol, but it is truly justified within the context of the film. The ending is also very violent, but again, in a serious film, it is a very valid concluding statement. Unfortunately, much of this has been heavily edited on video, even though the violence is not as gratuitous as most Hollywood pap.

"The sex scenes are different from standard films. They are clearly designed to be erotic, not raunchy, and the three lesbian scenes are so realistic that many staunch feminists applauded at a 1981 screening at the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality.

"Also, it is the only such footage involving Constance and Annette, two of the premier sex goddesses in adult film history. ANNA OBSESSED is a powerful little classic with much impact. There are red herrings thoughout to throw you off track, but I only wish more adult films had this much substance. And yes, Jamie Gillis is in the film, but you'll have to pay close attention."
